Guided Reading in Grade 2

This term we have continued to develop students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Every morning students are involved in a range of Literacy activities that focus on developing a range of reading strategies, comprehension, spelling, handwriting and oral language activities. This term we have continued to run our Guided Reading Sessions in class and we have been working on procedural texts, as well as continuing to expand on already learnt genres of persuasive and information texts.

Modelling 3D Shapes

In mathematical terms, a 3D shape has three dimensions. The D in '3D' stands for dimensional. In a world with three dimensions, you can travel forwards, backwards, right, left, and even up and down. The ability to travel up into space and back down differentiates 3D from 2D. We live in a 3D world. We can walk anywhere on land and can fly anywhere in the air. Underwater, we can swim in all three dimensions.

Students in Grade 2 had the opportunity to make connections between familiar and new3D objects. Students learnt about 3D shapes by exploring, observing, comparing and discussing all the features that the shapes entail. Students examined structure and all common features – i.e. sides, edges, vertices and surfaces on each. Calculating these features was a hard task!

The best part of this topic was when students were challenged to construct the 3D shapes using coloured sticks and play dough. Well done with the patience and dedication.
